How Much Does a New Boiler Cost in 2026? (Complete UK Price Guide)

A new boiler is one of the biggest home expenses you will face — but the price varies enormously depending on the type of boiler, the complexity of the installation and which brand you choose. This guide breaks down real 2026 costs so you can budget with confidence.

New Boiler Prices by Type

The type of boiler you need is the single biggest factor in the total cost. Here is what each type costs to buy and install in 2026.

Combi Boiler

Heats water on demand — no separate hot water cylinder needed. The most popular choice in UK homes, ideal for small to medium properties with 1 to 2 bathrooms.

Supply only£800–£2,000
Supplied + installed£2,000–£3,500
Best forFlats, terraced houses and smaller semis

System Boiler

Works with a hot water cylinder (usually in an airing cupboard) but does not need a cold water tank in the loft. Good for homes with higher hot water demand.

Supply only£1,000–£2,500
Supplied + installed£3,000–£5,000
Best forLarger homes with 2 or more bathrooms

Regular (Heat Only) Boiler

The traditional setup with a hot water cylinder and a cold water tank in the loft. Often found in older properties and usually replaced like-for-like.

Supply only£800–£1,800
Supplied + installed£2,500–£4,000
Best forOlder homes with existing cylinder and loft tank

Installation Costs by Scenario

The total cost depends on what work is involved. A straightforward swap is much cheaper than moving the boiler or converting to a different type.

Installation Scenario Typical Cost Timeframe
Like-for-like combi boiler swap£2,000–£3,5001 day
Combi boiler in a new location£3,000–£4,5001–2 days
System boiler with new cylinder£3,000–£5,0001–2 days
Regular boiler like-for-like£2,500–£4,0001 day
Convert regular to combi£3,500–£5,5002–3 days
Convert combi to system£3,500–£5,5002–3 days
Back boiler removal + new combi£4,000–£6,0002–3 days

What Affects the Price?

Two identical boilers can cost very different amounts to install. Here are the main factors that move the price up or down.

Boiler Location

A straightforward like-for-like swap in the same location is the cheapest option. Moving the boiler to a different room or wall requires rerouting gas, water and flue pipes, which adds £500 to £1,000 or more.

Pipework Changes

If your existing pipework is incompatible with the new boiler — common when converting from a regular to a combi — the plumber will need to cap off, reroute or replace sections. This is one of the biggest variable costs.

Boiler Brand & Output

Budget brands (Baxi, Ideal) start from around £800 supply-only. Mid-range (Worcester Bosch, Vaillant) cost £1,200 to £2,000. Premium models with longer warranties cost more upfront but may save on repairs long term. A larger output (kW) boiler for bigger homes also costs more.

System Complexity

Homes with multiple heating zones, underfloor heating, smart thermostats or megaflo cylinders require more complex installations. Each addition increases the labour time and parts cost.

Flue & Gas Route

If the flue needs to be extended, routed through a wall or fitted with a plume management kit (to prevent condensation affecting neighbours), this adds £100 to £300. Gas pipe upgrades may also be needed if the existing supply is undersized.

Access & Building Work

Difficult access — boxing in, tight cupboards, loft work — increases labour time. If the old boiler is in a kitchen cupboard that needs modifying, or a back boiler needs removing from a fireplace, expect additional costs.

How to Save Money on a New Boiler

A new boiler is a significant investment, but there are practical ways to reduce the cost without cutting corners.

Book in Summer

Gas engineers are quietest between May and September. Many offer lower prices or faster availability during the off-season. You also avoid the risk of being without heating during winter while the work is done.

Stick with Like-for-Like

Replacing a combi with a combi in the same location avoids costly pipework changes. Converting from one boiler type to another can add £1,000 or more in labour and materials.

Get Three Quotes

Always get at least three written quotes from Gas Safe registered engineers. Compare what is included — some quotes cover thermostats, system flush and magnetic filters; others charge extra.

Consider Finance

Many installers offer 0% finance over 12 months or low-interest plans over 3 to 5 years. Some manufacturers (Worcester Bosch, Vaillant) run their own finance schemes through accredited installers.

Choose the Right Size

Do not overspend on a boiler that is too powerful for your home. A 1-bed flat does not need a 35kW combi. An oversized boiler costs more to buy, wastes energy and does not heat your home any faster.

Check for Grants

The ECO4 scheme and Boiler Upgrade Scheme may offer grants towards a new boiler or heat pump if you meet the eligibility criteria. Your installer can check whether your property qualifies.
